A court in Irkutsk, Siberia, declared Monday a former police officer convicted of 56 murders.
The other 56 murders were committed between 1992 and 2007, according to the Irkutsk Procuratorate in a media release.

The public prosecutor’s office accused Mikhail Popkov of a „pathological desire to kill people“. Already in 2015, the former official was convicted of murdering 22 women. Later, he confessed 59 more murders, in 56 cases he was now convicted. The investigators could not prove three murders, as the news agency Interfax reported.

Among other things, the ex-policeman had lured his victims in his spare time by offering night rides in a police car in his hometown of Angarsk near Irkutsk. As so far worst serial killers in Russia and the former Soviet Union were considered Alexander Pitschuschkin, who were convicted in 2007 for 48 murders to life imprisonment, and Andrej Tschikatilo, who still had to jail Soviet times for 52 murders.
