A Russian manager has been arrested under spy suspicion in Italy, according to press reports. He has been in solitary confinement at the Poggioreale prison in Naples since 30 August, Italian newspapers reported today.

The 57-year-old Alexander Korschunow, manager of the United Rostec owned United Motor Company Holding (ODK), was discharged on his arrival at the airport of Naples, it said. The US demanded his extradition. He is accused of having stolen documents of the US company General Electric. He should have gone to Italy with his wife on vacation.

Confident Putins

The Italian daily La Repubblica described Korschunov as the longtime friend of Vladimir Putin, ten years his senior. This criticized the action of Italy. The ODK has been working for a very long time on the development of a new engine. „This is our first high-tech product in 28 years,“ said Putin at the Far Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.

The ODK builds motors for military and civil purposes as well as for the space and sea travel and for industrial plants for the extraction of oil and gas. Korschunov is, according to his company, director of trade relations development. He has worked in the past for the Russian Interior Ministry and received because of his merits a state order.
