Russia is against Facebook and Twitter

Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor has accused the US corporations Facebook and Twitter of violations of Russian law and initiated „administrative proceedings“ against them.

Both companies had „delivered no specific information on the location of data of Russian users in the territory of the Russian Federation,“ said Roskomnadzor chief Alexander Sharov today the news agency Interfax.

The regulator repeatedly threatened companies with a ban in Russia if they did not comply with a 2014 law obliging social networks to store the personal information of Russian users within Russia. Both Facebook and Twitter have not called a „timeframe“ within which they wanted to save the corresponding data, criticized Sharov.

Critics fear that the 2014 law exposes Russian users to the risk that their information may be leaked by the country’s intelligence services.
