Accompanied by criticism from Brussels and domestic disputes, Romania is today taking over the EU Presidency for half a year. According to the government, the country, which joined in 2007, wants to be a „neutral mediator“ in the EU’s efforts to plan the future.

The country’s mandate includes decisions such as Brexit, the new election of the European Parliament and negotiations on the post-2020 budget. Commissioner Jean-Claude Juncker recently doubted the unity and willingness to mediate of the leadership in Bucharest. Before Romania, Austria held the presidency of the Council.

With Romania coming to Bulgaria, the second country to head the EU Council, which is due to deficiencies in the fight against corruption under special observation of the European Commission.
