The Iraqi capital, Baghdad, was hit by several rocket attacks yesterday. As journalists from the AFP news agency reported, at least five loud explosions were heard in the evening.

At least three rockets had struck near the US embassy in the highly secured Green Zone, and two more in residential areas, according to security circles. According to the Iraqi security forces, there were no dead or injured.

Pro-Iranian militias in Iraq had promised in October to stop the attacks on the US embassy in Baghdad. Washington had previously threatened to close the embassy if the attacks did not stop.
Tense situation

Dozens of rocket and bomb attacks have been carried out on foreign embassies, troops and facilities in Iraq since October 2019. The US has repeatedly blamed pro-Iranian militias such as the Shiite Hezbollah brigades for the attacks.

On January 3, 2019, the Iranian top general Kassem Soleimani was killed in a US drone attack in Iraq. The killing put both countries on the verge of war. Shortly before the first anniversary, the situation is particularly tense again.
