Protests by schoolchildren and students in Chile have led to violent clashes with the police. Hooded people today hurled stones and incendiary devices at the police in Santiago de Chile, which in turn fired tear gas into the crowd.
The protests were directed against the government of the conservative President Sebastian Pinera, who took office exactly two years ago.
Chile celebrated 30 years of democracy
