Protests by schoolchildren and students in Chile have led to violent clashes with the police. Hooded people today hurled stones and incendiary devices at the police in Santiago de Chile, which in turn fired tear gas into the crowd.

The protests were directed against the government of the conservative President Sebastian Pinera, who took office exactly two years ago.

Chile celebrated 30 years of democracy

Since October last year, numerous people have been taking to the streets in Chile against the government. The protests were sparked by an increase in ticket prices for the metro. Demonstrators are also demanding better access to health care and education, as well as a move away from the neoliberal economic system. It is also about a new constitution that the Chileans should decide on in a referendum in April.

Today, the Chileans also thought of the return of the South American country to democracy 30 years ago. „It was undoubtedly three fruitful decades,“ said head of state Pinera at a ceremony. “But there are also problems that have caused great pain in the heart of our nation. We need a broad alliance of all parts of society to accomplish our mission. ”
