In addition to the New Year’s Eve party at Copacabana, the virtual celebration planned for the new year in Rio de Janeiro has now also been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

„The decision is necessary to avoid gatherings, out of respect for the victims and for the safety of all,“ wrote the administration of the Brazilian metropolis yesterday (local time) on Twitter.

The New Year’s Eve party in the Brazilian metropolis is one of the most famous in the world and attracts millions of tourists to the port city every year. The fireworks are fired from rafts in the Atlantic Bay, and musicians, bands and DJs perform on several stages on the city beach of Copacabana. The concerts should be broadcast on the Internet this year.

Brazil is currently one of the hot spots of the coronavirus pandemic. So far, almost seven million people in the country with around 210 million inhabitants have been proven to have been infected with the corona virus. Over 182,500 patients have died in connection with Covid-19 respiratory disease.
