Resistance to the national emergency at the Mexican border, called for by US President Donald Trump, is growing: 23 former members of the Republican Party have sent a letter urging their deputies and senators to agree to a resolution that would end the state of emergency.

The former members of Congress argue that Trump bypasses the parliament. The House of Representatives wants to vote tomorrow on such a resolution, which brought the Democrats. Despite an expected majority, however, it is doubtful whether the parliament could eventually topple the emergency.

Trump announced veto

Among the signatories of the letter published today by Politico is former Senator and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. Hagel is also one of 58 signatories to a statement that also addresses the state of emergency reported by the Washington Post. It states that there is „no factual basis“ for the state of emergency declared by Trump. Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has also signed this declaration.

With the democratic majority, the House of Representatives is expected to pass the resolution. She then goes to the Senate, the other chamber of Congress controlled by Trump’s Republicans. Even if both chambers passed the resolution, Trump himself would have to agree. He has already announced his veto. To override this veto, a two-thirds majority would be required in each of the two chambers. This should not come together as things stand.
