With a new invention, British researchers want to make data storage faster and more durable. The new carriers would also consume significantly less energy than conventional technologies, writes the journal „Scientific Reports“.
Common memory technologies such as DRAM and the Flash memory used in USB sticks could be replaced by the new development, because the invention combines the strengths of both, the magazine quoted a participating scientist Lancaster University in the UK. In addition, the new memory would reduce the energy consumption by one-fifth at maximum performance in a data center.
For example, computers equipped with the new technology would not need to power up and could go unnoticed to sleep to save energy. So far, Flash chips are used for data storage for a longer period of time, for RAM the faster DRAM chips.
