China plans to exchange Hong Kong Prime Minister Carrie Lam, according to a media report. The Financial Times yesterday reported, citing people familiar with the case, that China is considering replacing Lam with a temporary head of government.

Lamb’s successor could be appointed until March and take over the remainder of her term until 2022. Hong Kong’s government was recently under pressure from the ongoing mass protests.

For months, tens of thousands of people have been taking to the streets of Hong Kong again and again demonstrating against Lams government and democracy. They accuse Lam of being too close to the Beijing leadership. There were repeated violent clashes between protesters and the police. Meanwhile, the protests are also directed against the government in Beijing.
