In a raid on the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro, the police have secured 8.5 tons of drugs and 30 firearms. In the use of several special units in the north of the metropolis yesterday (local time) a suspected criminal was killed, five others were arrested, as the military police said the state.
The amount of seized drugs and weapons was the largest yield in one day in the history of Rio, it said. Among them were reportedly 75 grenades, 23 rifles, two machine guns and a submachine gun. The Mare area, where the operation took place, is a conglomeration of about a dozen favelas where drug gangs and militias are active.
