After the death of African American George Floyd following a brutal police operation in the US metropolis of Minneapolis, mass protests against racism have taken place in other European cities.
In violation of the corona virus protection rules, thousands of people took to the streets yesterday in both Amsterdam and the Irish capital Dublin. They held up cardboard signs with inscriptions such as “The life of black people counts”.
According to Dutch media, around 3,000 people took part in the rally in the center of Amsterdam. In Dublin, the demonstrators moved to the US embassy, calling Floyd’s name. In front of the embassy grounds, the demonstrators went to their knees as a sign of violence against blacks and remained silent for a moment. The police estimated the number of participants at 2,000 to 3,000 and spoke of a peaceful course.
„Who do you turn to if you can’t turn to the people who are supposed to protect you?“ Criticized the protester Fionnuala O’Connell. „Today we say our opinion and raise our voice,“ said protester Raphael Olympio.
On Sunday, numerous people marched to the US embassy in London to demonstrate against Floyd’s violent death.
