US detainee R. Kelly, who has been detained for abuse allegations, has to stay in prison for the time being because he can not collect the money for the bail. His lawyer Steve Greenberg yesterday confirmed media reports that Kelly could not pay the required ten percent of the one-million-dollar (about 880,000 euros) deposit.
„Correct,“ Greenberg said when asked if the singer was still in detention. R. Kelly had already spent two nights in prison. Kelly was not as rich as his fame would suggest, the lawyer said. „He really does not have any money at the moment.“
The 52-year-old R & B star had faced police in Chicago on Friday. He is accused of serious sexual abuse of minors. On Saturday, a judge set a $ 1 million bail. Under US rules, however, Kelly only has to deposit ten percent – $ 100,000 – as collateral. He must also hand in his passport and not be in contact with minors or alleged victims and witnesses in the proceedings
