Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that all foreign forces will withdraw from Syria, revealing the discussion of the idea of forming a working group on this matter, after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who stressed the removal of the Iranians from there.
The talks between the Russian president and the Israeli prime minister in Moscow focused on the idea of forming a working group on the normalization of the situation in Syria, and concluded with Russian emphasis on the withdrawal of all forces from Syrian territory.
Putin said the group’s work would also be linked to the withdrawal of all armed forces from Syria, the full restoration of the Syrian state and the preservation of its territorial integrity in apparently indirect messages to the United States and Turkey.
Netanyahu said, „We will continue to work until the Iranians come out of Syria, because Iran threatens to destroy Israel and we will not allow it to be located close to our borders.“
This long meeting was the first between Putin and Netanyahu since September 17, 2018, when Syrian defenses accidentally dropped a Russian aircraft during an Israeli air strike on Syria.
The killing of 15 Russian servicemen in that incident led to tensions with Tel Aviv, and the question of freedom of movement that Israel wanted in Syria was questioned.
