There has been no progress this week in negotiations between the EU and the UK on their post-Brexit relationship. EU negotiator Michel Barnier was „disappointed and concerned“ after another round of talks with London today. The British negotiating partners had „shown no willingness“ to respond to EU demands.

Great Britain left the EU on January 31st. In the transition phase until the end of the year, the country will remain in the EU internal market and the customs union. Negotiations, especially on a trade agreement, have not made progress for months.

„Anyone who had hoped for an acceleration of the negotiations this week was disappointed,“ said Barnier. He warned that the negotiations now only had a good two months. An agreement should be in place by the end of October at the latest so that it can be ratified by the parliaments in good time before the end of the year.

Both sides resumed negotiations yesterday after a brief summer break. To date, around a hundred experts on both sides have once again consulted in working groups in Brussels on highly controversial issues such as future competitive conditions and fishing rights.
