A bomb threat against the American social media giants Facebook and Instagram in Menlo Park, California, has sparked a large-scale police operation.

On Tuesday night, police officers investigated a suspicious package found near the offices of the two companies. The object later proved safe.

The city police department issued a warning at around five in the afternoon, urging the public to avoid the area around Block 200 on Jefferson Drive for the duration of the investigation. The anonymous bomb threat was received by the New York police at around 4.30pm, which then turned on local authorities.

The building on the Facebook site was evicted and searched by a bomb squad. According to Facebook, all employees are safe.
