After the rape and murder of a young woman in India, the four alleged perpetrators have been shot dead by the police. Policemen wanted to commit the crime scene with the suspects during the night, said an employee of the police. The men had suddenly tried to grab the weapons of the officials and to flee. The police had shot the men out of self-defense.

Woman abducted, raped and killed

The four men between the ages of 20 and 30 were suspected of raping and killing a 27-year-old veterinarian last week. The young woman disappeared, according to police, at a toll station near the city of Hyderabad, where she had parked her scooter.

Men had offered the woman to help repair her scooter, then allegedly kidnapped, raped and killed the woman. Subsequently, they are said to have taken the corpse to a road underpass about 25 kilometers away and set it alight.

Thousands of people demonstrated in several cities after the fact and demanded more rights for women. In India, there have been repeated cases of sexual violence against women and children in recent years, which have also caused consternation internationally. In 2012, a student on a bus in Delhi was raped by several men while driving and was so badly injured that she died. This case had led to great indignation and stricter laws in the country.
