In the face of a dramatic rise in coronavirus infections, the authorities in the Philippines have again imposed exit restrictions on large parts of the island state. As of tomorrow, the regulation will apply to the capital Manila and four neighboring provinces, said President Rodrigo Duterte. „Nobody expected thousands to fall ill in a single day.“
According to Duterte, people are only allowed to leave their homes in the next two weeks for necessary shopping and sport. Public transport and all domestic flights will be discontinued. Most shops also have to close and restaurants are only allowed to offer takeaway food. More than 27 million people – about a quarter of the population – are affected by the measure.
Since the previous curfew in the Philippines was relaxed in early June, the number of infections has quintupled and has now reached over 100,000. According to official information, more than 2,000 people died as a result of the infection.
