At least ten people were killed and dozens more injured in two explosions in the southern Philippines today. The victims were five soldiers and four civilians, said the military in the Southeast Asian country.
First, according to the Red Cross, a motorcycle parked next to a military vehicle, to which explosives were attached, went into the air.
The explosion occurred on a main road in the city of Jolo in Sulu province, 1,000 kilometers south of the capital Manila. Shortly afterwards, there was a second explosion nearby. Police units immediately searched the area for more explosives, it said. The island of Jolo is considered the stronghold of the Islamist terror group Abu Sayyaf.
Only ten days ago a leader of the militia surrendered to the police. Anduljihad Susukan is accused of being responsible for the kidnappings and beheadings of foreign hostages. He had surrendered to Davao City on Mindanao Island after negotiations.
The Islamist had previously sought medical help there. The arrested is alleged to be 23 murders, five kidnappings and six attempted murders.
