Parliament in London votes on further Brexit course

London’s parliament voted in the early evening on how to move forward on the EU exit. It is already the second round of voting since the crushing defeat for Prime Minister Theresa May with her Brexit agreement in mid-January.

Unlike the first time at the end of January, however, the amendments tabled so far by the Members of Parliament are unlikely to be successful. At that time, parliamentarians had called for renegotiation of the Brussels-negotiated treaty on leaving the EU. Even a Brexit without agreement they refused. The vote, however, has no binding effect.

Before the next round of voting, EU Council President Donald Tusk has called on Britain to come forward with new ideas. „No news is not always good news,“ Tusk said Wednesday on Twitter. „The EU27 are still waiting for concrete, realistic proposals from London on how to break up the Brexit blockade.“

May had already announced on Tuesday a third round of voting on 27 February and asked for more time for the renegotiations with the European Union. So far, Brussels is strictly rejecting changes to the Brexit Agreement. Great Britain wants to leave the community of states on March 29th.

A bipartisan group of MPs postponed an attempt to wrest control of the Brexit process from the government. The plan envisages forcing May to postpone Brexit should it not be successful with its withdrawal agreement by the middle of next month. The showdown is scheduled for the end of February.

May threatens Thursday no danger from the EU-friendly rebels, but there are reports that the Brexit hardliners could teach her a symbolic defeat. As a result, parts of the Conservative MPs refuse to support the government’s draft resolution. Because these indirectly confirm the non-binding vote of the previous round of voting against a no-deal Brexit.

If Parliament rejected the government’s draft resolution on Thursday, Mays ability to ultimately win a majority for its Brexit agreement would be further called into question.

Critics like Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn accuse May in any case with time with what he considers to be hopeless renegotiations time. She wants the parliament in late March shortly before leaving the EU before a fringe-or-die vote on their slightly changed Brexit agreement, so the charge.
