Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has called on the country’s people to pay taxes. He appeals to everyone to declare their assets and benefit from a tax amnesty by the end of June, Khan said in a video speech today. „We have to change if we want to become a great country. If we do not pay taxes, we will never raise our country, „Khan said.
Most recently, tax revenues in Pakistan have dropped. Very few people and companies in Pakistan pay taxes at all. Khan had already threatened with the tax revenue in the spring already resolved to dissolve the tax authority FBR and replace it with a new one. He had promised that taxpayers‘ money would not be abused or landed by corrupt officials.
Great economic problems
In recent weeks, Khan has also come under criticism from the opposition and media because his government has made no progress in increasing tax revenues. Higher tax revenues were one of the main election promises made by Khan’s „Movement for Justice“ party (Tehreek-e Insaaf / PTI).
Khan released the video message the day before the presentation of the budget for the next fiscal year, which begins in early July. Pakistan is currently suffering from massive economic woes and has recently reached an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on a rescue package worth some six billion dollars. In view of the country’s precarious financial situation, the powerful military also wants to accept cuts.
