Germany’s Minister of Finance Olaf Scholz is ready, according to information from the news magazine „Der Spiegel“, to run for the SPD presidency. Scholz had offered his candidacy this week in a conference call with the three interim chairmen, the newspaper reported today.

Scholz had said in June after the resignation of his confidant Andrea Nahles, for time reasons, not to be available for the party presidency. The turnaround of the Minister of Finance is also due to the fact that so far no one from the front row wanted to run for office and last in the party leadership, the concern was grown before a further crash of the SPD in elections, writes the „mirror“.

Application deadline until the beginning of September

Scholz would be the 13th applicant. Previously it had become known that Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Boris Pistorius and the Saxon Minister of Integration Petra Köpping are also candidates. The deadline for applications is 1 September.

The new party leadership will be elected at an SPD party convention in early December. By changing the articles of association, the Social Democrats want to enable a double point. However, the decision should already be made in a member survey from October 14 to 25. Before all candidates should present themselves at 23 regional events of the party base.
