176 people rescued in the Mediterranean on board the rescue vessel „Ocean Viking“ have today landed in Taranto, southern Italy. The refugees, including 33 minors, were housed in a „hotspot“. The EU Commission has already intervened to redistribute the rescued.

The „Ocean Viking“ had rescued the persons in the Mediterranean at the weekend. However, 180 people who were taken aboard in Maltese waters yesterday by ships of the Italian Coast Guard and police landed at Lampedusa during the night.

The humans were aboard a ship that had got into trouble 35 miles south of Lampedusa in Maltese waters. Due to the bad weather conditions, the Italian Coast Guard decided to approve the landing of the people on Lampedusa.
