According to a media report, US President Donald Trump is considering appointing former Democratic Senator Jim Webb as the new Secretary of Defense. Vice President Mike Pence has approached the issue at the 72-year-old, reports the „New York Times“. The name Webb is already circulating in the White House as a candidate for the succession of James Mattis resigned because of differences over the Syria policy.

Webb served in the Vietnam War. He is also the author of ten books. He was Minister of the Navy under Republican President Ronald Reagan.

The Republican Senators Tom Cotton and Lindsey Graham and former Republican Senator Jim Talent are also discussing the story. The US presidential office declined to comment.
