After the devastating cyclone „Idai“, the number of cholera diseases in Mozambique is rising rapidly. There are now 139 cases of severe diarrhea confirmed, said a senior employee of the Ministry of Health the state broadcaster Radio Mozambique.
On Wednesday, the government had spoken of five cases. As a result of the disease, five people were already killed, said the official Ussene Issa on. The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it will send 900,000 cholera vaccines to the disaster area.
Supplying with the essentials has priority
President Filipe Nyusi, during a visit to the heavily devastated city of Beira, said the operations to rescue people from the flooded areas would now be over. Now it is the priority of the helpers to provide the people with the essentials and to pave the way for reconstruction.
On March 15, „Idai“ had devastated large parts of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe and flooded large areas of land with heavy rain, especially in Mozambique. According to government figures, around 700 people lost their lives – but according to Helfer, the actual number is likely to be much higher.
Around three million people in the three countries are affected by UN estimates. In Mozambique alone, 91,000 houses were partly destroyed. Up to 500,000 people are estimated to have become homeless.
