According to Moscow, North Korea has suspended talks with the US until the outcome of the US presidential election. North Korea considers the talks with Washington „currently pointless,“ said Russian ambassador Alexander Mazegora in Pyongyang to the Russian news agency Interfax today.
Therefore, the dialogue seems to have been interrupted until at least after the US election in November. Russia is dissatisfied with the freeze in the talks, which could increase tensions in the region, Mazegora said.
Three meetings between Trump and Kim
In an effort to end North Korea’s nuclear program, US President Donald Trump had met North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un three times in the past two years, two of them at formal summits. However, there is little hope for a comprehensive agreement between the two countries.
North Korea, which is largely isolated internationally, is under international sanctions due to its nuclear and missile program. After a moratorium on nuclear tests and tests on ICBMs, Kim had hoped in vain to lift the sanctions. At the beginning of the year, the ruler announced that he would no longer adhere to the moratorium. Since then, there have been several missile tests in North Korea.
