North Korea’s ruler Kim Jong Un has received a letter from US President Donald Trump. Kim stated „with satisfaction“ that the letter was „of outstanding content,“ the state-run North Korean news agency KCNA reported today. Kim appreciated „the political judgment and the extraordinary courage“ Trumps and „seriously examine“ the interesting content of the letter. Details on the content did not make the agency.
The nuclear talks between Washington and Pyongyang are at a dead end. North Korea had basically agreed to a denuclearization of the Korean peninsula at the historic first summit between Trump and Kim in June 2018. Concrete steps were not agreed at that time.
The second summit in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi in February was broken off without result. North Korea had called for the sanctions to be lifted, but no agreement was reached on Pyongyang’s consideration.
Kim: „Unwavering“ friendship with China
At the end of a visit by China’s President Xi Jinping to North Korea, Kim highlighted the „unwavering“ and „unalterable“ friendship of both countries on Friday. Observers saw Xi’s visit as an attempt to remind Trump of China’s influence over North Korea a week before the G20 summit.
The first visit of a Chinese leader to North Korea for 14 years represented the tighter relationship between the historic allies. Previously, relations between China and North Korea had cooled noticeably: North Korea angered with its nuclear and missile tests, the Chinese partner, from then on UN sanctions against the country. Meanwhile, however, Beijing has solidarized more strongly with Pyongyang.
