North Korea is due to pay more than 500 million dollars (about 438 million euros) to the deceased student’s family because of the death of American Otto Warmbier. The US federal court ruled yesterday in Washington. North Korea was responsible for the torture, kidnapping and killing of the young man and for the injuries that Warmbier’s family suffered as a result.
At the beginning of 2016, the then 21-year-old Otto Warmbier was arrested after a group trip to the country on his departure and sentenced to 15 years in a forced labor camp for „hostile actions against the state“. He died a few days after returning to the US in June 2017 – he had been in a coma for 15 months.
Warmbier’s family had sued North Korea for „brutal torture and murder.“ They accused Kim Jong Un’s North Korean regime of taking hostage to Otto Warmbier, holding her as a political prisoner and brutalizing her.
