Japanese carmaker Nissan plans to cut 10,000 jobs worldwide, according to a report. The company is expected to announce the measure on Thursday, the Japanese news agency Kyodo News reported yesterday.
Nissan is under pressure after declining sales in the US and Europe. Already in May, the company announced it would cut 4,800 of its 139,000 jobs worldwide. The additional reduction of 10,000 jobs is likely to affect plants in South America, according to the report.
Sales fell sharply
Nissan generated as little profit in the past financial year as it had in almost ten years. As a reason, the company had referred to a recent „difficult economic environment“ and the consequences of the affair of the former Supervisory Board Chairman Carlos Ghosn. Also for the current year, Nissan gave a gloomy forecast at the presentation of its business figures in May. Nissan sold 5.5 million cars in the past fiscal year. Sales in the US fell by more than nine percent, in Europe even by just under 18 percent.
