Amnesty International and other human rights organizations are meeting today for a summit in Paris. More than 150 organizations from around the world are expected to attend the three-day Human Rights Defenders World Summit.
They want to work together to develop strategies against racism, oppression and discrimination.Even today, there are numerous governments that have detained, tortured and killed human rights activists to prevent them from doing their jobs, the organizers said.
The occasion of the meeting will be the 20th anniversary of a United Nations declaration, with which the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized human rights defenders in December 1998. At that time, a first summit of the organizations took place in Paris.
