A Norwegian aid organization has accused the international community of neglecting the refugee crises in Africa. The worst is the situation in Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burkina Faso, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said today.

Africa is once again the focus of the „most neglected crises“ worldwide, said NRC General Secretary Jan Egeland. The fate of millions of displaced people is met by inadequate help from international society, a lack of political will and little media interest. Despite a „tornado of emergencies, their calls for help fall on deaf ears,“ criticized Egeland.

Five African countries ahead of Venezuela

Nine African countries are on the NRC list of the ten most neglected crisis countries, with Venezuela in fifth place. The Coronavirus pandemic will further exacerbate the situation in African countries, the Norwegian Refugee Council warned.

According to Egeland, the people shaken by the conflict in the crisis regions are more dependent than ever on international solidarity, so that the spread of the corona virus causes „not even more unbearable misfortune“.

Cameroon tops the NRC list for the second year in a row. The organization pointed to the threats posed by the Boko Haram jihadist group in the north, the armed conflict in the west of the country and the consequences of the refugee crisis in Central Africa.
