The first large US retrospective on the work of artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) for about 30 years can be seen today in the New York Whitney Museum.
„This is the Andy Warhol retrospective, where all other Andy Warhol retrospectives will be measured in the future,“ said Whitney director Adam Weinberg during a preview. The exhibition of more than 350 works is „one of the most complex undertakings in our history“, but also „one of the most impressive“.
Curator Donna De Salvo knew Warhol personally. „That’s why I’ve always considered myself very lucky,“ said De Salvo. „Knowing him made a difference to me, nothing is better than working directly with an artist in his studio.“ Some people called his art superficial, but there was more to it. „You can understand Warhol at a glance, and if that’s what you want, that’s okay, but if you go deeper, you’ll be rewarded.“
The show „Andy Warhol – From A to B and Back Again“ is scheduled until March 31st. Warhol is considered one of Pop Art’s best known figures and one of the most important American artists of the past century.
