Not far from the skyscrapers and High Line High Park, New York’s Manhattan district is due to be converted into a beach next year. With 2.2 hectares, the public beach on the Hudson River about the size of three football fields, the developers announced. The riverside area of southwest Manhattan is minutes from the Whitney Museum and other attractions. The opening of the 900 million dollars (about 786 million euros) expensive project is planned for 2022.

Swimmers can not hope for a beach. The water quality in the Hudson River has improved significantly in recent years. Also, the recovering oysters – New York was considered one of the most important oyster sites in the world until the 19th century – suggest increasingly clean water. Due to some strong currents, it still seems doubtful whether swimming in the Hudson River would be approved from the beach.
