The Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu wants to name a new settlement on the Golan Heights after US President Trump – out of gratitude. Trump had previously recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the annexed area.
A new settlement on the Golan Heights annexed by Israel is to be named after US President Donald Trump. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified his proposal by recognizing Trump’s annexation last month.
The Israelis were „deeply moved“ by the US president’s „historic decision,“ Netanyahu said in a video message. He would submit his name to his cabinet.
Sovereignty of Israel over Golan recognized
Trump had recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the Syrian Golan Heights in the presence of Netanyahu in March, which had been annexed by Israel in 1981. There live now estimated 20,000 Israelis in settlements.
The annexation of the area conquered during the six-day war of 1967 was never recognized by the international community. It has been international consensus to date that the status of the high plateau can only be decided as part of a comprehensive peace settlement.
