Hundreds of protesters and demonstrators returned to the Hong Kong government headquarters in the morning to protest a controversial extradition law.
Despite the intense heat, the mostly black-clad demonstrators gathered to occupy areas around the seat of government. In addition to the final expiration of the Law on Deliveries to China, they again demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Carrie Lam.
Lams attempt to have the controversial law swiftly approved by the Beijing-wide majority in the Legislative Council had sparked the biggest demonstrations in Hong Kong in three decades in recent weekends. After the mass protests, Lam had apologized on Tuesday for the controversy over the law. There have been shortcomings in the work of their government.
The head of government did not withdraw the law as demanded by the opponents. However, she emphasized that there were no plans to resume discussions so that the draft would expire in July 2020. The law would have allowed the Hong Kong authorities to extradite suspects in China, although the Chinese judiciary is not independent and also serves political persecution.
