New protest camps in Bulgaria

0

Only one day after the evacuation by the police, the anti-government protesters in Bulgaria rebuilt their road blockades. After a new demonstration, in which more than 5,000 people took part in pouring rain yesterday, they again pitched tents at three large intersections in the capital Sofia. To protect the new protest camps, they set up large garbage cans, park benches and planters all around.

The police had cleared the road blockades that demonstrators had previously set up in Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv. In Sofia, officials dismantled the demonstrators‘ tents. The police also announced that they would not tolerate new blockades. Despite the warning, she did not intervene in setting up the new protest camps. The demonstrators armed themselves with stones and bottles, the police said as a reason.

In Bulgaria there are currently the largest anti-government protests in years. For four weeks, thousands of people have taken to the streets in Sofia and other cities every day to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Boris Borisov’s conservative government. The protesters accuse the government of corruption and proximity to oligarchs.
