After the mass protests against the controversial law for deliveries to China, a new demonstration is planned on Sunday in Hong Kong. The organizers of the previous protests said today that the police have not raised any concerns. The demonstration was to lead from Victoria Park to the Admiralty subway station, which is located at the seat of government and the Legislative Council.
The area witnessed major clashes between police and demonstrators on Wednesday calling it a „riot.“ 81 demonstrators were injured. The police spoke of 22 injured officials. Eleven people were arrested. The security forces used tear gas, batons, water cannon and pepper spray to drive out the demonstrators.
One million people at Demo
On Sunday, according to various estimates, several hundred thousand to one million people in Hong Kong demonstrated against the law. It would allow Hong Kong authorities to extradite suspected and wanted persons to the People’s Republic of China. Critics warn that China’s judiciary is not independent and serves as a tool of political persecution.
The former British Crown Colony has been autonomously governed as a separate territory since its return in 1997 to China under the principle of „one country, two systems“. Unlike the People of the People’s Republic, the seven million inhabitants of today’s Chinese Special Administrative Region enjoy the right to freedom of expression, freedom of the press and assembly.
