The US Democrats have set a new deadline for the Washington administration to hand over the tax returns of President Donald Trump. A first deadline of 10 April had let the government pass. Now, the democratic chairman of the House’s tax law committee, Richard Neal, set a new deadline for 23 April, he said in a letter to the IRS yesterday.
If the new deadline is not met, it would be interpreted as „refusing my application,“ warned Neal. In this case, he could issue a „subpoena“ – a legally binding invitation to submit the material.
Mnuchin referred to legal issues
Minister of Finance Steven Mnuchin, to whom the IRS reports, had stated after expiry of the first time limit that the examination of the corresponding request could not be completed in time. It would have constitutional issues to be clarified, such as the powers of the Congress and the rights of US citizens.
But Neal said that the „concerns“ raised by the Minister of Finance were „without foundation.“ He argued that there was no legal basis to reject the motion of his committee.
Trump is the first US president since Richard Nixon, who refuses to return his tax returns. There are numerous speculations about his motives. Among other things, it is speculated that he wants to keep certain business activities a secret – or that his assets are not as large as he has been cited by him.
