The leaders of Greek and Turkish Cypriots are today launching a new attempt to reunify the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, which has been divided for 45 years.
Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci want to explore the opportunities for a new round of association talks at a meeting in Nicosia.
It is the first meeting of the two since two years. Akinci recently proposed sharing the gas resources discovered off the coast of Cyprus, which Turkey has exploited to exploit the EU.
The entire island has been a member of the EU since May 2004, but Turkey occupies the northern part of the island. The invasion followed a coup by Greek nationalists in Cyprus in 1974.
