The Dutch government wants the former finance minister and head of the Euro Group, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, according to „Süddeutsche Zeitung“ (Tuesday edition) to head the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to vote.
According to the report, The Hague is currently trying to organize a majority of the European countries for Dijsselbloem as the successor to the Frenchwoman Christine Lagarde, who is to head the European Central Bank (ECB).
Further negotiations at G-7 meetings
According to reports, the governments in Berlin and Paris are open to the idea, but there was no official statement. Without the approval of these two central EU states, a candidate would probably have little chance.
For years, emerging economies, which are becoming more and more important economically, have been pushing for the head of the IMF. But the Europeans reject the demand of the emerging countries. According to the report, the Dijsselbloem staff will continue to be voted on at the G-7 meeting in Paris this week.
