After the parliamentary elections in Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud and the blue-and-white coalition of his challenger Benny Gantz are almost on par. Netanyahu’s Likud came to 33 to 36 seats, according to television projections, and Gantz’s center-alliance blue-and-white to 36 to 37 seats.

Both sides then declared each victorious. „The right wing led by Likud has clearly won,“ said Netanyahu. He will start building a right-wing government together with his partners during the night.

Gantz and his co-driver Jair Lapid, on the other hand, said together: „This election has a clear winner and a clear loser, Netanyahu has promised and lost 40 seats.“ Gantz advocated for the centrally located in the political list blue-white.

Also „grand coalition“ possible

When all the votes are counted, President Reuven Rivlin will call on all parties to choose a head of government and give the one with the most backing the order to form a government. This then has at least 28 days time.

Accordingly, a large coalition of Likud and blue-white would also be possible in terms of computing. However, both Netanyahu and Gantz had excluded this in the election campaign.

The final election result is not expected before early Wednesday morning. More than six million voters were elected to vote, who decide on the composition of the Knesset.

Israel’s longest-serving prime minister
Netanyahu has been in office since 2009 and served as prime minister from 1996 to 1999. If he remains head of government after the election, he could become the longest-serving head of government in the history of Israel, even before state founder David Ben-Gurion.

Netanyahu is currently facing massive corruption charges. Israel’s attorney general intends to file charges of corruption in three cases. It’s about corruption, infidelity and fraud. Before a final decision on whether the head of government really has to go to court, but still has to be a hearing. Netanyahu rejects all allegations.
