According to Johns Hopkins University, the number of infections with the novel corona virus detected worldwide has exceeded the two million mark. This is based on data from the US college in Baltimore yesterday morning (local time). As a result of the pandemic, the university has reported more than 128,000 coronavirus deaths worldwide.
600,000 cases in the U.S.
The number of known infections per country can only be compared to a limited extent due to the different test rates and a high number of unreported cases. The respective population size of a country must also be taken into account. In terms of absolute numbers, the university has the highest number of infections, with more than 600,000 cases in the United States, a country with around 330 million inhabitants. So far, more than 26,000 people have died as a result of an infection.
By Tuesday evening (local time), the university in the United States alone had 2,228 deaths within 24 hours – more than ever before in one day.
Highest death rate in Spain in terms of population
In terms of population, the university has recorded the highest proportion of CoV deaths relative to the population in Spain to date. Almost 39 people per 100,000 inhabitants died there after an infection. In Belgium it was about 36, in Italy about 35. The United States, however, recorded about eight deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
The researchers‘ website at Johns Hopkins University is updated regularly with incoming data and therefore shows a higher level of confirmed infections than the official figures of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US health authority CDC.
