More than 60 people were killed in a raid on hundreds of armed men in a village in the Sudanese crisis region of Darfur. In addition, more than 60 people were injured, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) today. About 500 men were involved in the attack on the village of Masteri, some 50 kilometers from the provincial capital El Geneina, on Saturday.
The UN office noted that there have been several such raids in the region in the past few days. The background was mostly fighting for farmland.
Darfur has been devastated by an ongoing conflict between ethnic minority rebels since 2003. Among other things, rebels are fighting against supporters of the now overthrown ex-ruler Omar al-Bashir. According to the UN, around 300,000 people have been killed in the conflict and 2.5 million more displaced.
