The number of refugees on the way to Europe is increasing again. As the newspapers of the Funke Media Group report, the EU border protection agency Frontex recorded almost 4,300 unauthorized border crossings on the main migration routes in Europe in May – almost three times as many as in the previous month. According to the report, the “most active” escape route was also the Eastern Mediterranean in May.
The increase follows a significant drop in the number of refugees during the coronavirus crisis. In April the number of illegal crossings had dropped to a record low.
Overall, according to the May report by Frontex, there were 31,600 illegal crossings in the first five months of this year – six percent fewer than in the same period last year.
