EU Council President Charles Michel is striving for a pioneering role for the European Union in the fight against possible further pandemics. The EU has already played „a decisive role“ in mobilizing to finance and organize research on vaccines against the coronavirus, wrote Michel in a guest article published today for the newspaper „Die Welt“. It must continue to take on a pioneering role – “especially to improve global preparation for future pandemics”.
Michel proposed an „international pandemic contract“ for this. However, he named the top priority for 2021 to be „banning the coronavirus into the history books“. To this end, the EU will coordinate its efforts to get the vaccines „safely and efficiently“ on the way.
