Mexico became the fourth country in the world to have exceeded 150,000 confirmed deaths as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. According to statistics the country’s health ministry reported yesterday, the total rose to 150,273. The country had reached the previous high within 24 hours on Thursday: It was 1,803. Many hospitals in Mexico are currently full.
President falls ill
On Sunday, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced that he had tested positive for the corona virus and was being treated for mild symptoms. He had had contact with numerous people in the previous days without wearing a mask.
Because this also included the government’s top pandemic expert, Hugo Lopez-Gatell, he was exceptionally not present yesterday at the CoV press conference every evening in the presidential palace, but instead switched on via video. The president had a slight fever, he said. No further details were given to protect his privacy.
Few tests
In Mexico, which is the tenth most populous country in the world with almost 130 million inhabitants, there is very little testing for the virus and hardly any contact tracing.
The national borders have not been closed, and no negative test or isolation is required from travelers. So far, no exit restrictions or a mask requirement have been imposed.
