
To curb the coronavirus crisis, the Spanish government plans to extend the state of emergency and curfew across the country by two weeks to April 12, according to media reports. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said this to the regional presidents at a video conference today, the state television broadcaster RTVE and the newspapers „El Pais“ and „El Mundo“ reported, citing government circles. An extension of the alarm condition, the third highest level of emergency, must be approved by Parliament.
Almost 400 dead within 24 hours
The current national emergency with a 15-day curfew came into effect exactly one week ago in Spain. Violators face fines or even prison terms. After Italy, Spain is the country most severely affected by the crisis.
In the country, 394 more people died of coronavirus-related lung disease Covid-19 within 24 hours, the government announced today. That is an increase of around 30 percent. This means that 1,720 people have died in Spain.
