British Prime Minister Theresa May fears in a renewed referendum on the EU membership of their country, according to media reports an „irreparable“ political damage.
The BBC previously published excerpts from a speech May was to make in the lower house later in the day.
„Let us not be worthless against the British people by trying to set up another referendum,“ according to the BBC, in the speech. „Another vote would cause irreparable damage to our policy, because it would tell the millions who trust our democracy that democracy does not keep its word,“ it says.
British voters voted in favor of the United Kingdom’s exit from the EU (Brexit) in June 2016 by a narrow margin. This will take effect on 29 March 2019. May last week postponed a parliamentary vote on the EU-negotiated Brexit treaty in the face of a looming defeat in January.
