The Chinese government took steps at the start of school in the People’s Republic to gain more influence in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Teaching there is now much less in Mongolian, but in Mandarin (standard Chinese), the main language of China. The Mongolian minority in China protests against this and sees a threat to their cultural identity.
