British media reports of a supposedly heightened terrorist threat in Spain have sparked outrage and protests in Mallorca.

The Government of the Balearic Islands responded quickly and denied this false information in the United Kingdom, the managing director of the Balearic Tourism Development Agency (AETIB), Jaume Alzamora, was quoted yesterday in the newspaper „Ultima Hora“.

The media had confused the increase in police presence in various holiday regions, which has been routinely carried out in Spain for years in the summer months, with an increased threat of terrorism, it said.

There had been „more than 45 tendentious articles“ that had caused „unrest“ and „alarm“ in Mallorca, wrote the „Mallorca Magazine“.

The British Foreign Office confirmed in London on request that, contrary to what some media reported, there had been no change in travel warnings to Spain.

The daily newspaper „Daily Express“, for example, had titled on Saturday: „HIGH RISK – British tourists were warned after Spain’s terror threat was increased to STRONG“.
